Two TV spots for The Dark Knight Rises have surfaced, and they finally -- finally -- make the third Batman movie look like it might be kind of fun. There's action, fighting, Batman, a small touch of humor -- and no choir of children somberly singing or crazed monks chanting or Bruce Wayne looking like he's going to burst into tears or anything. I'm not saying that all comic movies have to be as light-hearted as Avengers was, but goddamn, DKR was beginning to look like Inception, but sadder and with less action. Anyways, The first spot is above, and the second, more Catwoman-y spot is after the jump. (Via First Showing)

Nolan trilogy are movies with a "superhero". Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are superhero movies.
Well, I'm psyched as hell, and trust Nolan implicitly. Frankly, the less he listens to the fans, the better. I'm getting tired of comic movies being nothing but a cascade of nerdy in-jokes. I'd much rather have an artist commit entirely to a specific vision of the character, and fanboy outrage be damned.
I have a feeling that despite appearances there is a lot of this movie that is being hidden...it sounds cheesy to say we should "trust" Nolan but judging by the last 2 movies + the prologue (which was frikkin' AWESOME) this deserves a suspension of judgement. Let's also not forget all the lamentation of Heath Ledger's casting as the Joker before the film was released...me included....I could NOT see how that was going to be good....well....TDK speaks for itself.
Am I the only one that loved the two earlier trailers?
All superheroes have save the world themes...that's why they're superheroes. However, I have a hard time relating to the enemy being an alien race, godlike power, or evil mastermind that wants to make everyone his slave. These make for exciting movies, but I'm not emotionally invested. However, what is engrossing is an enemy that doesn't have special powers, but who is interested in just attacking my way of life. Someone who is trying to destroy the glue holding society together. That's plausible, relatable, and scary.
That's why I liked the 1st two Batman films. The enemies were, at their core, just terrorists. People that, "just like to watch the world burn". These are the enemies that I really need protection from...not some fantastical alien overlords.
And that's why I have so much hope for the DKR. From the enemy battle cry (It means arise!) to the Catwoman's warning (you'll wonder how you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us). Holy cow...those are some ominous undertones there.
I'll take my kids to see Avengers and enjoy the heck out of it. But man, I'm taking myself to see Batman and I can't wait.
Nah it's only on some sites like this one that you only see the haters. Not sure why. But I'm totally with you, the two trailers were awesome, especially the last one. Very bold and not generic like (say) the avengers (on top of that, probably not showing the entire movie as well, which is always a plus for me).
I loved the Avengers, but to me TDKR is a sueprhero movie for adults. You know, people who want the enemis to be well defined (not some amde-up alien race just there to be destroyed), a story, etc.
I have to say, I really hate that batwing. It´s like incomplete. I thought that they were going to add some transformers-like wings or some cg shit more batsy. Looks like a LEGO that was sucked too much by a baby and lost some pieces. Apart from that, there´s really nothing wrong at all with the sweet TAS-Burton version, at least with the more squared TAS one. I know this has been discussed ad nausea but for me this new batwing takes the "realism" direction to ridicule heights. It´s the equivalent of giving Batman a hat instead of the bat ears. I mean come on, at least paint a bat on it so that the g.i.joes don´t think it´s part of their arsenal.
I do think it looks awesome. But I don't think it looks Batty.
Ergo, I concur.
I think whether you have a problem with the new Batwing will depend on whether you had a problem with the Bat-tank. The idea is that Batman doesn't have a personal team of elves to build a giant model bat that can fly with "I AM BATMAN" written on the side. You want a more realistic Batman, you are going to have to accept a few concessions from the over-the-top world where Batman has his own personalised Batman credit card.
I understand there´s certain license, sure, but at least the batm... bat-tank has certain language that reads as Batman´s. For example the typical propulsor or whatever in the rear, the air shafts and the whole windshield that resembles the cowl. It´s subtle but it´s there and it´s understandable. Even inverting the g.i.joe example it works, if it was a Joe vehicle one could say: Hey this looks like the batmobile on steroids. That doesn´t happen at all with the batwing. Bats.
Uh oh, now I can understand what Bane is saying, and he sounds hilarious! Maybe mumble Bane was better after all.
He was better. I didn't want any change to his voice and I was upset by that small group of people who were complaining about it. So, Warner Bros. makes Nolan change it, and based on his "new" voice in the previous trailer and one of these TV spots, Bane sounds weaker. His voice lacks the sense of intimidation that was present in the Prologue and the earlier trailer.
"Small group of people"? WTF are you talking about? There was indeed a small group of people... who could (or pretended they could) understand him.
And they haven't completely changed his voice, they have made it clearer, you know, with the nice sound editing hardware they have at the studio? Just listen to when Bane says "Gotham, this is your liberation" in this tv spot and you'll see this is exactly as Tom said it while shooting.
Yes, a small group of people. How many millions of people do you think will be watching this movie worldwide? Or even just in America? Far more than those who complained. And not everyone who saw the Prologue had problems with his voice. I stand by my post. It was more menacing, intimidating and disturbing as it was in the Prologue and the first full trailer. It was deeper then. Now, a lot of edge has been taken off his voice. I'm not intimidated in any way.
I just picture Bane with a mild accent, and this guys sound really, really white. European, in fact.
I agree with you, Nix_Nightbird. This new voice almost sounds like Gandalf speaking through a vocoder. Bane sounds too refined and old. I'm not intimidated at all. He makes me think of a magician rather than a terrorist about to bring the pain. I really want the old voice back. It was menacing and disturbing.
Yeah, neither the old voice or this new one seem very good to me. They should have gone with some kind of accent.
so far the trailers are not doing it for me just wanting to see how nolan finishes his take on batman plus still hate that s&m mask bane is wearing..
But you love the mask put on loki at the end of the Avengers right?
I love Bane mask and is much better than a the luchadore from the comic. This one is scary.
I'm glad the Dark Knight Rises is taking things slow. The Avengers gave away all the goods on our first date.
who every got paid to design that bane costume ripped off Warner. Tim Burton villains look scarier
Hell yes they did! Should have gone with something like this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lHq9...

I'm certainly biased because I love Batman a substantial amount more than I love anything else that exists, ever, but I don't see how anyone could fail to be excited by this movie. These TV spots alone had some awesome moments. Bane being described as having been 'born and raised in hell on Earth'? Fuck yes. Batman sneaking about in a sewer getting closer as the lights flicker like a Weeping Angel? Fuck yes. Catwoman pretending to be Bruce Wayne's wife and pulling it off? Fuck yes. The Goddamn Batwing? Fuck Yes. The line 'I need you to get me back in the game' causing me to realise that this is essentially The Dark Knight Returns but without the weird gang members and old people? Fuck and yes.
Yeah, I think one of the strengths for this ad campaign is that, unlike all the other blockbusters coming out, it's not focusing on the Wham-Bang elements, but the story arc and character development. If I can use a ham-fisted music analogy, Avengers was like a fanfare, but The Dark Knight Rises is, and always has been, a crescendo. Both are appropriate and awesome.
I think the problem with it being more character focused is that the characters in the Nolan films are rather boring. It's just my opinion, I know that plenty of people like these versions, but I find that they're all sort of one note characters that tend to brood more than having actual personalities, so to me this isn't the third film showing a really interesting growth in the characters, like say the third of the original Star Wars films where we really saw them change and grow, but it just looks like more of the same, really. But once again, not trying to start a flame war or anything, it's just how I see it.
Yes. Exactly what you said. Perfect analogy. It is like comparing Mozart and Liszt. The common person would know them simply as classical musicians, while there are so many other wonderful differences between them and you can enjoy both equally for different reasons. Screw flashy ad campaigns. I would be more disappointed if TDKR copied the Avengers in their approach. And to me, I believe this film could steal some serious thunder in the end.
No matter what people may say this is still gonna be a big movie .....call me crazy it might give the avengers a run for its money.
Domestically, yes.
But as we saw yesterday... no-3D apparently hurts it, badly, overseas. It explains why TDK did (comparatively) poorly in overseas markets, North-American-centric storyline aside.
I don't get why you're so confused by the campaign, Rob - the movie is still more than two months away. They were still in the tease / anticipation stage of things.
And, yeah, this movie's going to be sombre. Not dark, per se, but sombre.
wow, two S&M dudes with mummbly voices going at each other. i better slow down now before i make an "accident"
I do find Anne Hathaway to be a beautiful woman and a capable actress, but I still find it very odd she was cast as Cat-Woman. I guess the best way to explain it is that casting appears to have gone as far against type as it could, while still hiring a sexy lady for the role, but maybe that'll turn out to be a wise choice when seeing all of her performance, high-tech sunglasses/kitty-ears-from-the-Sharper-Image aside.
