We've all bitched about unnecessary movie remakes here, but I'm not even mad about the news that some jackass over at Fox plans on remaking Ridley Scott's masterpiece Alien -- I'm just baffled. You're not going to have more talent involved. Even with today's CG, you're not going to have better effects. Not that I would at all condone a remake of Casablanca, but at least you could argue that that movie could be updated to modern times -- but you can't fucking do that with a science fiction movie set way in the future. So what will the result be? A pile of shit that in no way matches up the original, nor ever could. (Via Bloody-Disgusting)

Really? I mean. REALLY? Why would you even think to making a remake of such a classic movie? Money..yeah. Money seems to be everything nowadays. But even a prequel wouldn't suffice, I believe they should continue the series with Alien 3. (Yes, just call it Alien 3 and forget the last two that were made.) It seems to me Hollywood is jacking off dry with ideas. Maybe they should look to the video game industry for concepts. Oh wait. That idea should be scratched *cough*AvP*cough*

Hey, get the trio of Ridley Scott, H.R. Giger, and Dan O'Bannon back and you won't be able to keep me away. But I doubt they will even get Giger, they've been screwing him over for years.
-
What, no love for Dan O'Bannon on here? Giger had a lot to do with the movies success, as did the 1958 film "It! The Terror From Beyond Space," which inspired O'Bannon's screenplay. Still, as we all know, good writing can carry bad art better than good art can carry bad writing (although Alien had the benefit of good art and writing), so three cheers and a hoist of the whiskey bottle for Dan O'Bannon!!!

If it is a reboot: WORST. IDEA. EVER. Why mess with perfection?

SORRY FOR THE DOUBLE POST

Joel, Dude, I like what you wrote... makes sense. Just like what happened with music -- no need for artists to have big labels sell their music -- I think independant film makers are going to eventually take over with original ideas on a low budget. This will take time, but it will happen. Mark my words.

It'll be PG-13 in the theaters so the teen crowd can see it, but they'll release an unrated version for DVD. It'll also have the shakycam and jumpy editing. I don't think Ridley Scott's all that great, but the original Alien had a deliberate pace that built the atmosphere nicely. Hate to sound like an old man when I'm just out of college, but doesn't anyone do long shots anymore? I don't think Hollywood's out of ideas, but I do think it's run by tremendous cowards and condescending morons. I'd imagine there's a ton of great scripts floating around various studios, many of which will never see the light of day or will be altered to fit their narrow ideas of what the audience expects. So, fearing that original ideas will alienate audiences, they rely on franchises that everyone knows. It's all gonna eat itself one day, and then we might get enough disgruntled filmmakers to see independent film become vital again.
-
The problem here is that they'll turn it into another action flick, and ALIEN wasn't action... It was horror. It was a slow, fuck-with-your-head, monster-in-the-house horror movie placed in the middle of space, with a monster that had the twist of being dangerous to kill because it had acid for blood. ALIENS turned it into a crazy action series. Cameron has that habit-- He takes a slow-paced horror/suspense franchise and turns it into a fast-paced explosive action series. He did it with ALIENS and he did it with T2. Nothing after ALIENS was any good, you'll notice. Cameron took the suspense and surprise out of it, and blew his wad all in one film. Then Whedon came along and crapped on the remains. Then the franchise just went to stupid places with the following flick and the "Vs. Predator" stuff (which could have been good if they didn't feel the need to make both flicks focus on the human characters instead of the Alien or Predator). Sigh. Hollywood's out of ideas.
-
THE ONLY REASON the first Alien did well is Hans RĂ¼di Giger. Personally, I'd like to see the uncensored version he originally envisioned. A lot of his art was used in the first film but you could tell it was toned down for the ratings board.
-
It's a given that a remake of Alien is a very very bad idea. I just wanted to comment though that that trailer still gives me chills and makes feel really happy. I think I need to break out this DVD today. Thanks for posting it!
-
They should remake the Star Wars Prequels instead. Hollywood, you again shit your pants.
-
.... This is like remaking Terminator 2. There's no fucking point.
-
i say bring it. if it looks bad, i just won't watch it. if it looks good, why not. stories(, fables, legends, myths, gossip, tall tales, books, comics, cartoons, campfire malarky) are constantly being retold; why should movies be any different? if you argue that it takes away from telling a new story, breaking new ground, then of course you're right, but i'd prefer something on the radio to dead air. maybe this time they can make the little f***ers pop out of their heads instead of their guts.
-
If it's a prequel they can't really have Ripley in there, can they? Unless they rewrite her character to have a different introduction to the Aliens, which would make it a reboot. All that aside, who are they likely to cast as Ripley? I'm guessing Jessica Biel or Megan Fox, but praying to god that the whole thing falls through.
-
im just gonna go ahead and say it...alien sucked in the first place...can't get any worst
-
Why not just make whatever shitty movie you have planned and not call it Alien. I mean you are going to change everything except the way the alien looks right? So just call it something else. Bet its going to star Dwayne The Rock Johnson as Ripley and he is like, totally gonna kick alien ass. Seriously I think when they buy the rights to these movies the money comes from the marketing department.
-
God this and the Buffy remake in less than a week? I gotta start drinking
-
@Valdemar- Syphillis came from Europe, not America. Captains Cook and Bligh may have brought it here. and definitely their crewmen did in Polynesia. I cite Alan Moorehead's book, "The Fatal Impact" copyright 1966, published by Harper & Row. The word syphillus is from the Latin, I should add, but mean no disrespect. Your comment would be more accurate if you just had used "Michael Bay" instead of a centuries old veneral disease.
-
I swear, sometimes I think animatronics (you know, those puppets movies seem to shove aside nowadays) look ALOT more realistic than CG... well, depending. Compare Jurassic Park one puppets to the CG ones in the third >_> That's one case of how something being made later on, doesn't necessarily mean it will LOOK better... For some reason I see this new Alien movie suffering from the same fate :/
-
What would be better is if they made a movie of the Voyage of the Space Beagle, where the story originated.
-
A remake would be horrible, but as the first poster said a Prequel wouldn't be a bad thing. And it also looks like Ridley Scott is actually involved, bonus...
-
No doubt it will be every bit as good as the Rollerball remake. :-P
-
If this happens, its another DUMB move from Fox!
-
From what I've been hearing it's some kind of 'origins' story (they're so hot right now) but still, they could very easily botch that up no problem -_-
-
I'm so mad I'm shaking.
-
this just proves nothing is sacred to hollywood for sooner or later everything will be remade though it could also just be a fill in since ripley and sigourney have been talking about aliens 4. but still some films need to be left alone and aliens is one of them
-
:( There is a god, and he hath no compassion for the peasantry. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!
-
I bet twenty bucks It will be PG-13. You can quote me on that.
-
@ Skeletor: "That's not to say that I worship the original as if it were some golden xenomorph idol." Best Christmas present ever. Also, while I am sort of hoping it will be a prequel instead of a remake, but what sort of material will they use? The Space Jockey's Race? some other human-alien encounter that pre-dated the first movie? Any thoughts on this matter folks, since I really have no idea what a prequel could cover.
-
GRZombie: I was just going to say that! The ad that made him famous was for bread; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFLBvLxLJMI

Allthou a remake of Alien will be a cloud of shit and prequels is the worst thing to come from America since syphilis. I have always wanted to see more to the big aliens and their spaceship.
-
RE: My Frenchy-fied, TV commercial director reference... my mistake! Hoping for a "prequel" - - please, no remake. You know Fox won't make a better version so why even bother?
-
I love how people are getting up-in-arms about a director of TV commercials possibly getting the remake, when Ridley Scott started his career by directing TV commercials. Also, the hell with remakes, let's get a proper sequel already, preferably without Sigourney Weaver.
-
Wat.
-
Now, I'm of the like mind that this "remake" is definitely unnecessary and, most likely, not worth anyone's time producing, but really, is it going to ruin the original Alien? Of course not. The 1979 Alien will still be available on VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, whatever format you prefer to watch it on for commercial availability to enjoy anytime. My copy of the Alien Quadrilogy won't spontaneously combust or disintegrate upon the release of this film in the theater. I liken remakes to plays. Unless you watch a performance of Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Chicago, whatever on its original premiere performance, you'll NEVER see the original performance of that play. There will always be subtle differences, actors will come and go, and sometimes scenes will be added or removed, to various degrees of quality and acceptance. Same with remakes. The Thing, Dawn of the Dead, Battlestar Galactica, and A Fistful of Dollars all have their detractors. All that said...Fox's track record will most likely place this remake in the crap section. Be ready for a PG-13 remake with Miley Cyrus and Zac Ephron.
-
Ah why bother bitching I've given up. Yes it'd make sense for them to simply make a sequel just on another planet or whatever but Hollywood's full of idiots who try to get new fans to the detriment to old ones and by making a piece of crap they alienate the entire audience the most recent example of this being Terminator 4. What we fans need to do is take a stand and simply watch or do something else instead of going to films like Wolverine despite hearing or seeing that they are terrible. But being nerds we go anyway and we become part of the problem. That's my 2 cents and now I'm off to prebook my tickets for Transformers, God I hate myself.
-
per rotgut-- >The LAST time a "director of TV commercials" was given the >keys to the Alien franchise, we got that horrible "let's >run around this space prison in circles for twenty >minutes" French guy. Alien 3, am I right...? that would be...david fincher? the non-french, non TV commercial director went on to do other subpar horrible stinkers like _seven_, _fight club_, and _zodiac_ (and by dint of those three, really does earn alien 3 another watch AND a fair chance)? yeah, you're right.
-
This whole thread had me depressed until Critters were mentioned. Goofy-assed-skiffy-gold they were... Oh and no Alien remakes, reboots, or prequel please. They already did a pretty good job of fucking that all up with the AvP festering piles of shit. I mean movies...
-
:_( They are going to "break" my favorite movie. Please... someone stop the remake atrocity.
-
@rotgut Uhhhmmm, no. Alien 3 was David Fincher, who directed music videos, is from the U.S., and went on to direct Fight Club, Se7en, and Benjamin Button. Alien 3's problem stemmed mostly from beyond his control. You're thinking of Alien Resurrection director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, in terms of a French guy. But he had filmed three well-received features before filming Alien Resurrection, and went on to direct Amelie. And the director himself, Ridley Scott, may be involved with the remake: http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/04/28/ridley-scott-is-considering-alien-prequelreboot/
-
I'm still waiting for Aliens vs. Predators vs. Critters vs. Graboids vs. Ewoks. In the end they have to reluctantly join forces to defeat King Ghidorah.
-
Agree whole heartedly with MDK and TR; this would sadden me greatly, as I think some of the things they'd try to update it with would be more shakey cam, more MTV-ish editing, and some pretty craptastic one liners. That's not to say that I worship the original as if it were some golden xenomorph idol. But some things are better left for remakes until about 30 years from now.
-
>.< the original is perfection this is further proof that traditional media companies are on their last leg WRITE SOMETHING NEW FOR CHRISTS SAKE!
-
I'm with you on this one, I don't see how a much value added can be attained by updating Alien. It was a movie driven by suspense and helplessness in the face of a (mostly) unseen creature. Updating visuals would only contribute to a small % of the scenes shot. Maybe they can make the android more andoidy or space more spacey, but the heart and soul of Alien was in the acting and ambience, something that remaking it can only screw up.
-
"So what will the result be? A pile of shit that in no way matches up the original, nor ever could." EXACTLY. THANK YOU. WORD FOR WORD, 100% ACCURATE STATEMENT. Oh, and REMEMBER: The LAST time a "director of TV commercials" was given the keys to the Alien franchise, we got that horrible "let's run around this space prison in circles for twenty minutes" French guy. Alien 3, am I right...? FOR GOD'S SAKE, NO DIRECTOR OF TV COMMERCIALS!!! What's next? A reboot of The Wizard of Oz??!!??!!
-
I think a prequel is what is actually planned here... http://io9.com/5271805/ridley-scotts-alien-getting-a-prequel-by-commercial-director-carl-erik-rinsch Not a remake thank god. At least I hope so.
