AND THEN YOU BRING IN HAWKMAN EXACTLY AS HE APPEARS IN THE COMICS.
He looks fucking hilarious. As Poe Ghostal (who tipped me off) and I discussed, he somehow looks more ridiculous than Brian Blessed did as King of the Hawk-Men in Flash Gordon, a movie made in the '70s with a soundtrack by Queen. Potentially the number 1 time when DC fans would not give Smallville shit for changing a character's appearance (okay, besides the Wonder Twins) and they just recreate it perfectly. Hee hee hee. Smallville writers, you are obviously tripping balls. Well done. Well done indeed.

Mr. Bricken how dare you take Prince Vultan's name in vain. Granted the Hawkmen looked ridiculous in the 1980 (not 70s!) classic Flash Gordon, but this is insane. Over its run I've watched maybe 7-9 episodes, among them the "Justice League" ones ... and I can't wrap my head around this one.

I LOVE Brian Blessed. I am totally gay for Brian Blessed. I love Blessed as Vultan. But he was a tad ridiculous in that role.

Glad we're on the same page on that. I got a huge nerd-rection when he was cast in Thor. I was saddened when that never came to fruition.

So... let's see if I've got this straight.
Crap like Dragonball Evolution takes the classic manga and turns it into some pathetically bad, and obnoxious CW Teen drama, and it utterly fails miserably. And everyone condemns it.
But then something that is the exact same order of likewise styled crap as Smallville finally does the first decent thing since the show started and actually made something look and feel how it was suppose to. And people like you belittle it.
You know... either people like you are going to have to get your priorities straight, or establish some coherent rules for what is stupid "because they changed it" or stupid "because they didn't change it." so that you don't end up sounding like an ignorant hypocrite when you comment on these things, half the time.
This is precisely why every fanboy argument in the history of ever, is always doomed to fail from non-existent logic: You're never happy and you never will be.
It always amazes me to see people throwing themselves 100% into either foolish extreme of these arguments and actually trying to act like they have a good point.
"They changed it from the original. it sucks." or "They kept it like the original. it sucks."
Is there any room for intelligent constructivity in between these two fanboy gut reactions to everything?
Most times, no. And certainly none to be found here.
You know... if these two silly extremes really are everyone's quick answer for why "everything else based on the original is stupid", then I think that everyone should probably start shutting the fuck up unless they have a valid criticism to make, from now on.
Or at least set down some rules beforehand so that every gut reaction doesn't end up looking as hypocritical as this one.

I agree with that, no one is ever happy and it is just easier to be an asshat and mock.
I am actually sort of excited that they are going to have some classic heroes looking how they are supposed to. Hell Green Arrow's outfit I thought was actually pretty close to his series two look, with the hood and not the silly pied piper hat. Hell if they have star girl in the correct outfit we all win.
However his wings look to be too small.

That Guy replied to Karma:
"So let me get this straight -- the whole point of Smallville has been to take the less comic book-y elements out of the superman story (e.g. no tights, no flying) to make a modern show with the potential for mass appeal. For nine seasons, you have beloved DC characters show up with sleeker, more realistic, modern outfits that are inspired by their classic superhero costumes, but not beholden to them. It even puts Superman in a darker, Matrix-y superhero outfit this season as to avoid the garishness of his red and blue underpants. I get that.
AND THEN YOU BRING IN HAWKMAN EXACTLY AS HE APPEARS IN THE COMICS."
Did you even read that?
I doubt he's belittling anything. The way I read it is for 9 years Smallville has set about not resembling a comic book. When they introduce a character they look nothing like they comic book counterpart. When they finally have a character look like they do in the comic book, they look ridiculous compared to everyone else on the show. Hawkman doesn't look sill standing next to Superman in the comics cause Superman looks silly compared to Hawkman in the comics. To not alter a character so he blends into your already established Universe is jsut retarded

That Guy got it right...
But also, the argument is not simply "Didn't change it/did change it." It's how much change was there. That's what makes fanboy arguing fun. It's not black or white. Shades of grey, man...shades of grey.
Dragonball sucks because they changed it too much. Hawkman (in Smallville) sucks because he's the same in an alternate crappy, Dawson's Creek TV alternate universe of the DCU.
Also...fuck you guys, Hawkman is sweet. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to this episode (of the crappiest show I actively watch). If you look closely at that picture...that is a mace, ladies and gentleman. A mother-fucking hawk-mace.

I agree that everyone bitches too much about straying from cannon--especially when it comes to aesthetics. Look at all the fanboy cry babies that whined when Optimus Prime showed up in Bayformers with lips.
This Hawkman looks great. And I wouldn't have cared if they made him less "wingy" either. It looks more normal than Namor will look when/if he eventually hits the big screen. At least the wings are in the right place.

...unless the origin is about how a nerdy comic guy develops wings from nth metal which he stole from some random Luthor Lab in Smallville. See? Writing for Smallville is easy.

I think this is fine, as I usually do with Smallville stuff. They went with comic accurate costumes this time, and I dont have a problem.
Smallville hasn't been about taking 'the less comic book-y elements out of the superman story'. Maybe in the first 4 seasons, I'll give you that. But it's been all over the place for a while now. Did you see the Doomsday stuff last season? Aside from 'living' in a human vessel, the actually Doomsday monster looked pretty much exactly like the comic version.
And Clark isn't out of his costume either. He just hasn't put it on yet. The Matrix-y black outfit is a temporary thing, as he gets used to the idea of a costumed hero. He's GOING to get to the red and blue eventually. Maybe not on the show for us to see, but it's in the character's future.
This isn't the Superman story we're all familiar with. But that doesn't mean it's a completely separate story just using the names we already know. It's a mix of both. A retelling of the Superman story. A 'what if' story maybe.

Funny thing is, this is not the first time a character from the comics has appeared on Smallville with his costume intact. Apparently, though, no one seems to remember the first time, maybe because it was a gag, and rather subtly (for this goddamn show, anyway) handled: in one episode, a season or two ago, Oliver Queen takes Lois Lane to some kind of costume party. Ollie's "Robin Hood" costume is, however, a PERFECTLY reproduced version of the classic, Neal Adams-designed Green Arrow uni. It looked FANTASTIC! Which actually makes the whole scene a ginormous third-degree burn. This all takes place sometime after Ollie has adopted his alter-ego. When we first see him at the party, the camera lingers lovingly over this costume, which (except for the mask, which was horribly dorky) looks light-years better than the one he normall ywears on the show. It's almost as if the producers were saying "See, fanboys? It's not that we CAN'T do this right---we just don't WANT to!" Which, if one has ever actually WATCHED Smallville, is entirely the point...

Actually, I think Vultan's wings were a bit bigger. So they'd actually be a bit closer to how big you'd need to lug a human body into the air under power.
So, in that way, 1980's Flash Gordon is more scientifically accurate than Smallville.

I'm beyond caring. Smallville has gone completely insane, but that's nothing new. I'm fine with scrapping the bad ideas and bringing in good, new ones, but Smallville is doing the opposite, apparently. And who the hell does the CW think they're appealing to? Fanboys don't want an hour of 30-year old white people staring dramatically at each other.

That's fucking awesome. Sure, he should be buffer, but at least he looks like the Goddamn Hawkman! They didn't need to make him blend in with the rest of the characters on the show because a) people dress differently from each other in real life, b) Hawkman dresses differently from other superheroes, and c) everybody in Smallville dresses horribly bland. We should all give thanks to Horus that they didn't just put in a hoodie and call it a day.

That Hawkman would look better if he didn't have all that crap on his belt, which makes his midsection too big. Throw some shoulderpads to cover up the skinny arms. The mace looks like a stick with a balloon on the end, but I guess that's all he can lift.

I have a love/hate relationship with Smallville; I mock it and belittle it and yet I record it every Friday. But as for this, I think it looks very cool. And makes me a little more excited for the episodes. The fact that these episodes are penned by Geoff Johns is another reason I am excited. Now, I don't like everything he writes, but I did think the Legion of Superheroes episode he wrote last season was pretty fun, and pretty comic-faithful. So, I look forward to what he has in store.
I am curious to see what ideas Johns has come up with to incorporate the JSA into the Smallville world. They are the elder statesmen of super-heroics in the comics, but I'm not sure how they will fill that role in Smallville, since there has never been mention of any prior superheroes. But we'll see. But maybe they will be playing these older heroes up to be more like your average comic book hero, and that could be the reason for the more faithful look? (though the full chest armor is a little different) But now I can't wait to see Stargirl in costume.

My only complaint is that Shanks isn't buff enough for the role. He should have done the "Taylor Lautner needs to gain 30 pounds of muscle for New Moon" routine and hit the weights right after he was cast. Since Hawkman's costume is 98% exposed chest, Shanks can't pull a "Michael Douglas in Batman" and cheat by using padding.

Chica replied to FuryOfFirestorm:
You obviously have no idea the kind of time frame television filming takes place within if you think a person could put on 30+ pounds from the time they are cast to the time they go into production.
And secondly, have you heard of scale? If a guy straps himself to something that's 13 feet across, they're gonna look smaller.
And thirdly, I know most of you are probably men, and have a question for you because of that. As I was reading I couldn't help but think you seem to be holding this actor you don't know to an unrealistic standard of fitness, based on an ideal that a certain media outlet has sold to you. Now I know that that particular actor hasn't been called 'scrawny' in about a decade, if ever. Why did you look at that picture and think "He's a skinny under- muscled nerd"?

I gotta say I think it's awesome. Sadly the rest of the show is what sucks. Okay, the wings look a bit hokey, but for a TV budget that's pretty damn good. Better than putting him in a hoodie or something from an Ambercrombie catalog like they've been doing from day one.
I'm guessing that maybe the costume is supposed to be retro and kids like Clark are beyond that. Kinda like how the creators think kids are beyond using the original costumes so they tossed them out the window for this show.
Also, I just realized now that Smallville is going to make Superman only a bit older than Stargirl.

So let me get this straight.. Smallville, a show all about who Clark, Chloe, Lana, Lois, and Lex are dating THIS WEEK is a modern, sleek interpretation of Superman for the modern viewer? SERIOUSLY? It's freaking Dawson's Creek with Superman as Dawson. There is very little that is Superman about this show. Half the freaking WORLD has figured out Clark has powers b/c he has absolutely NO DISGUISE. At least Superman had the whole glassses/personality change.. This is modern? In today's world, we are to believe that nobody can guess that Clark Kent has super powers when he openly and unabashedly uses them right in front of everyone EVERY DAY. It's baffling how this is "modern". I also love how it's so "modern" to basically have the characters sit around and talk about the who is dating whom every other episode as they flip flop, break up, make up, and then hate each other for no real reason. This is MODERN? Sounds like drivel to me.. and people gobble it up.
As for Hawkman, it's actually decent. Too bad it's being wasted on this horrible show and he'll probably be casted as some teenie bopper idiot.
