Someone’s Writing a U.S, Version of Death Note, Everybody Freak Out

Since every J-horror flick that has even the tiniest bit of success in Japan gets an American remake, it should actually be no surprise that someone has optioned the rights to make a U.S version of the hit manga/anime/live-action movie pair Death Note. ANN reports that a screenplay’s being written for Vertigo Films, which also produced Ju-on (The Grudge), Dark Water, The Eye, Shutter and more.

Anime fans are freaking out, but I think they should calm down, because there’s absolutely no way an American Death Note movie would have anything but a passing resemblance to the hit series. It’s not even worth worrying about. Just give it up for dead. They won’t be able to make anything even as cool as the second Death Note opening credits (above).

What I think is interesting is that the screenplay is being written by Vlas and Charles Parlapanides, who are produced the 21 Jump Street remake Undercover for the CW. Now, I could totally see a U.S. Death Note TV show working for some reason, and I actually think the CW would be a great fit. Depends on them hiring pretty boys who can act, admittedly.
