Many, Many People Love Star Trek

No sarcasm here — the new Star Trek movie has done pretty damn well for itself, earning a stellar 95% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and earning $72.5 million over the weekend and including late-night Thursday screenings. Of course, X-Men Origins: Wolverine earned $85 million its opening weekend, despite a 37% freshness rating, a massively pirated copy of the nearly complete movie leaked online about a month before the premiere, and just generally not being very good. Of course, Wolverine opened in 700 more theaters than Star Trek, which certainly helped.

But I still can’t help but find it a little depressing, because Wolverine was pretty bad, and Star Trek was pretty damn awesome. I guess I can blame the number of theaters — for which I can probably blame the success of the previous X-Men movies vs. the lack of success of the last few Trek movies. Still, it just seems wrong, doesn’t it? If there’s any kind of justice, Trek will have less of a drop-off next weekend than Wolverine did this weekend between lack of competition and stellar word of mouth and end up outgrossing it. Sigh.

Oh, the video above is a much-needed companion piece to Shatner’s “Get a life” SNL bit from the ’80s. Enjoy.
