Something weird’s been happening with the G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra movie. Although there’s hardly been any news about the film that hasn’t been shitty in some way, when I ran the last trailer, I was disturbed to notice that some of you thought the commercial made it look kind of… well… good. I tried to convince myself that it was just post-Transformers 2 traumatic stress that had colored your opinions, but now the Terror Drome has a new TV spot for the movie… and holy fuck, it kind of looks good to me too.
Now, I’m sure this isn’t the case. I mean, we’re still going to have Crunchberry Commander and accelerator suits and Wayans pratfalls in the final film. But if I didn’t know any of that shit, this commercial would make me genuinely excited for the film. Between this and the Wonder Twins packaging, please make sure that your cats and dogs aren’t living together — we may be near the end times here.
Robert Bricken is one of the original co-founders of the site formerly known as Topless Robot, and its first editor-in-chief, serving from 2008-12. He brought the site to prominence with “nerd news, humor and self-loathing” as its motto, raising it from total internet obscurity to a readership in the millions, with help from his savage “FAQ” movie reviews and Fan Fiction Fridays. Under his tenure Topless Robot was covered by Gawker, Wired, Defamer, New York magazine, ABC News, and others, and his articles have been praised by Roger Ebert, Avengers actor Clark Gregg, comedian and The Daily Show correspondent John Hodgman, the stars of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Rifftrax, and others. He is currently the managing editor of io9.com. Despite decades as both an amateur and professional nerd, he continues to be completely unprepared for either the zombie apocalypse or the robot uprising.
