Captain EO Returns!

Captain EO, George Lucas’ and Francis Ford Coppola’s 3-D musical extravaganza starring Michael Jackson is returning to Disneyland in February for a (supposedly) limited return engagement. The film originally premiered in 1986, and it was George Lucas’ only post-Star Wars sci-fi effort that wasn’t set in a galaxy far, far away. A true immersive experience, EO incorporated in-house effects like smoke and lasers inside Disney’s Magic Eye Theater to enhance the overall fun of the flick. When viewed now it’s striking how much the Fuzzball and Hooter characters seem like proto Jar Jars, but the H.R. Giger-inspired Witch Queen design is still impressive nearly 25 years later. Overall it’s a goofy and entertaining kids’ film worthy of a nostalgic revisit. It’s also a chance for Disney to make heaps of cash off of the world’s most famous recently dead man. So basically it’s a win win all around, even if it is a bit crass. What do you think? Is this a great way to pay tribute to the lamented King of Pop? Or just shameless profiteering? (Via Robot 6)
