Josie and the Pussycats Get Real
?Oh fucking really? From ABC News:
Actor Nick Cannon and Atlantic Records are launching a worldwide search for three girls to resurrect Josie and the Pussycats, a band based on the Archie Comics characters.
Cannon, who dubbed them “the first rock ‘n’ roll girls group,” hopes the search will yield a reality competition series and a scripted comedy-drama, both to air on Nickelodeon’s TeenNick channel where he serves as chairman.
The characters inspired two cartoon series in the 1970s and a 2001 live-action feature film starring Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson.
You can’t really blame Archie Comics for trying to keep the Josie property viable by making the characters relevant for a new generation, and this sounds like exactly the sort of thing that will become another tween sensation a la Hannah Montana. It’s not for us clearly, but it’s still another lame reality talent show to clutter up the pop culture landscape. Now if Nick Cannon wants to somehow get NASA involved and send the selected winners into outer space like on the second Josie cartoon for the scripted follow-up show, that could actually be interesting to watch. Either way, TV is getting more vapid by the day.
When’s Jersey Shore back on again?
