Nintendo Maybe Possibly Thinking About Another Eternal Darkness Game

I hate posting rumors, but sometimes, rumors are so awesome that I desperately want them to be true, and I want to post them anyways. So I’m starting a new tag: Wishful Thinking, for just these sorts of things. Some cocaine-laced UK newspaper says Cher is going to be Catwoman in Batman 3? No tag. But Nintendo refiling its patent for Eternal Darkness, implying that there might be a new ED game? Goddamn I wish that’s what it means.

For those who don’t know or remember, Eternal Darkness was a GameCube game straight out of H.P. Lovecraft. Not only were there Elder Gods and demonic cities and horrible monsters in the darkness, the game had a sanity meter, and the more horrible shit you saw and experienced, the crazier your character got — which resulted in the game fucking with the player, by appearing to delete the game, turn itself off, prevent your attack button from working, having the main character’s head suddenly explode and more (see some of them in the video above). It was both brilliant and awesome.

Now, refiling the patent means nothing in and of itself; it’s possible Nintendo is just playing it safe, thinking about a new game at some point down the road, or maybe just re-releasing the old game for the Virtual Console. Or maybe they’re making an all-new game for the Wii with all new effects and Cthulu-goodness. Like I said, wishful thinking. (Via Kotaku)
