Fringe Has Officially Lost It

?Well, it had a good run, but all good things must come to an end. And the generally entertaining Fringe will apparently jump over that giant shark in a parallel universe in the second half of this season, when it airs its musical episode. Yes, you heard me correctly. There’s going to be a musical episode of Fringe.

Apparently it’s part of Fox’s week-long celebration of Glee, where all their major programming has some kind of musical bent. Now, while we could all blame Fox for this little nightmare — and I’m not saying we shouldn’t — I can’t help but wonder if the Fringe showrunners aren’t partially at fault here. I mean, I find it far more likely that Fox bigwigs ordered their prime programming to be musically inclined, but not be musical episodes per se. So Fringe could have been about a certain composition that makes heads explode, or someone who hypnotizes people by singing… and yet they chose to do an actual musical episode, with Olivia and Peter and Walter and Asterix singing. Which is dumb.

Apparently the reason people will be singing is because the episode will be seen through Walter’s eyes, and he’s interpreting life as a musical because he’s 1) crazy, 2) probably on LSD, and 3) he’s stressed that Olivia knows Peter’s secret. Oh, did I tell you it’s going to be a ’40-style musical, for some reason? It is. Sigh.

I think Fringe has gotten significantly better since its first season, and with help from 30 Rock and The Office being kind of terrible this year, it’s my favorite Thursday night show after Community. Fringe has pulled off a lot of goofy-ass shit, but I don’t know if it can pull this off. (Via Sci-Fi Wire)
