Rob’s Kontent Klearinghouse!

So I’m taking a little vacation to see Conan O’Brien on tour in Chicago later this week. Your friendly neighborhood Chris Cummins will fill in for me while I’m gone (which will be half of Wednesday and all of Friday, oddly, but rest assured you will get FFF and a contest). But I’ve been sitting on a lot of weird odds and ends now, most of them for far too long. I need to just get them all out there; please bear with me.

?? Afrodisiac
If you liked Black Dynamite even slightly, you will love the graphic novel Afrodisiac. It’s essentially the same conceit — the most badass pimp of the ’70s, except since its a comic it can be about a billion times more insane. For instance, Afrodisiac fights both Dracula and God at different points, and Nixon makes a surprising appearance here, too. But most of all, it’s worth it to see all the parody covers that creators Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca insert Afrodisiac into, including everything from ’50s romance comics to old school Marvel to manga to so much more. Highly, highly recommended.

? Celebration Generation Cakes
So this online store sent me some baking mixes a few weeks ago. Why did they do this? Because they thought you’d be interested in them. Why would you be interested in them? BECAUSE THEY’RE CAFFEINATED. Seriously, they sell mixes for brownies, cookies, and blondies, each of which have the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. I tried all three: the brownies and cookies both included espresso beans, which worked kind of like nuts (if you’ve had chocolate covered espresso beans, you know what I’m talking about). I liked the cookies most, but I’m more a cookie guy; the brownies were certainly tasty. The blondies were actually made with chai, and tasted kind of like pumpkin cake or something. I approved mightily. Visit their store right here.

? Erica the Would-Be Maid Girl
So Erica emailed me asking for my help; she wants to be a maid at the
maid caf? at the upcoming New York Anime Fest, and to do that she needs people to
view her application video here. Am I running this because she asked so
politely, because she makes such a good case, or because I want cute girls to get in the habit of sending me
videos of themselves? A gentleman doesn’t tell.

? Hobocon
This documentary is about three nerds who attend Gencon with no money in their pockets and no place to stay. It’s not exactly a major work of social commentary, but it is funny to see these guys beg for food for three days and try to find places to sleep that the security guards won’t kick them out of. Check it out here if you’re intrigued.

? Broken Toy
Forewarned Films has been making this series of short fan films about a super-powered experimental soldier gone batshit insane, and I’m enjoying the hell out of them. The special effects are great and… well, if you watch episode 3, there’s a guy in a monkey suit. You should watch episode 3, all I’m sayin’.
