Mr. Sandman, Bring Me a TV Series

?The big news that happened almost immediately after I was done with work for the day yesterday (sigh) is that Warner Bros. wants to make a Sandman TV series. Yes, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman of the Endless. No, it has nothing to do with HBO’s aborted attempt to make a Sandman TV series a few years ago. The Hollywood Reporter has the few, vague details in pesky complete sentences, but the only thing that matters right now is this:

Warner Bros. is talking to Supernatural creator Eric Kripke to run the show.

Wow. Again, I’ve not seem Supernatural, but from everything I’ve heard about the show, Kripke sounds like the perfect choice to make a Sandman series. He knows how to make weird material exciting and watchable to modern audiences, without dumbing down the material, and can handle both serialized storylines and overarching plots with panache. If he’s any kind of a nerd — and I’m guessing he is — I imagine he’d treat the source material with the respect it deserves, too. I don’t know that this will actually happen, seeing as Sandman has been stuck in development limbo for a while. But if a TV show is actually going to get made, this seems as auspicious a start as we’re going to get.
