Could SyFy’s Being Human Actually Be… Good?

SyFy just released the longest promo yet for their version of Being Human, and while it’s not perfect, it’s really freaking me out how… not bad the damn thing looks. Well, not all bad. Based on this vid, here’s what bugs me about the American adaptation:

? The fact that vampires apparently have Vulcan mind powers
? That Sally the ghost looks so much like British Annie the ghost (even wearing the exact same clothes) while American Mitchell (a.k.a. Aidan) and George/Josh don’t

Thing I like:

? Sam Witwer seems pretty darned good as Aidan
? It looks like they’ll be doing a lot of the same stories as the original Being Human
? That they’ll use some actual monster mythology, like the original
? The jokes (even the Twilight one — I don’t think Sally delivers it well [maybe it’s because it’s out-of-context with the rest of the scene, though]but it’s the kind of joke that the original Being Human would do — basically I like that they seem to live in our real world)
? That SyFy has the budget to make the ghost actually intangible more than once a season

I remain on the fence about the people playing Josh and Sally, but I don’t want to count them as bad just yet. I feel like Sally is bland, but then Annie was actually pretty bland when she started out. The guy who plays Josh is no Russell Tovey, but I think I can chock that up to Tovey being totally awesome — he’s got to be a hard act to follow.

Seeing as I — well, all of us — give SyFy a great deal of shit ’round these parts (and deservedly so) it’s nice to not be totally apprehensive about something they’re doing, especially something like this which, by all reasons, they should be fucking up from square one. Again, we may watch it and it may suck on toast, but at the moment, I’m not dreading the January 17th premiere. If only they would stop saying “new original series”, though… (Via Pajiba)
