Remember that awesome Mortal Kombat short (above) made by director Kevin Tancharoen hopes of getting Warner Bros, interested in making an awesome MK movie? Well, Warner Bros. said no, but all hope is not lost — they did approve a 10-episode web series to be directed by Tancharoen in the same style. Bloody Disgusting says the series will include Michael Jai White as Jax, and include “Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and of course Scorpion” — no word if Jeri Ryan will return as Sonya Blade, though. But if this series is popular enough — and I don’t know why it wouldn’t be, because even I thought it was awesome, although I give zero shits for Mortal Kombat — I can see Warner Bros. then approving it as a movie. Hell, they probably want to turn it into a movie now, but they can’t stand the thought of being seen as not having the idea themselves. So they order the web series, it becomes a hit, and then they get to pretend they were somehow responsible. Whee!
Robert Bricken is one of the original co-founders of the site formerly known as Topless Robot, and its first editor-in-chief, serving from 2008-12. He brought the site to prominence with “nerd news, humor and self-loathing” as its motto, raising it from total internet obscurity to a readership in the millions, with help from his savage “FAQ” movie reviews and Fan Fiction Fridays. Under his tenure Topless Robot was covered by Gawker, Wired, Defamer, New York magazine, ABC News, and others, and his articles have been praised by Roger Ebert, Avengers actor Clark Gregg, comedian and The Daily Show correspondent John Hodgman, the stars of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Rifftrax, and others. He is currently the managing editor of io9.com. Despite decades as both an amateur and professional nerd, he continues to be completely unprepared for either the zombie apocalypse or the robot uprising.
