Here’s the Devil May Cry We Don’t Know
Capcom’s Devil May Cry reboot/prequel, known simply as DmC Devil May Cry, sure riled up a lot of fans by turning the stylish, white-haired series hero Dante into a more mundane younger version of himself. In the game’s defense, it’s set in a parallel universe so as not to threaten the main Devil May Cry continuity or its fans, and it’s being made by Ninja Theory, who also made the half-decent Enslaved and the shallow Heavenly Sword.
Good news: if this newly released gameplay footage is any indication, DmC plays a lot like the Devil May Cry we all know about, and the scenery’s impressive (assuming we get to interact with it a little more). The bad news? It doesn’t look all that different from every other action title jockeying for our attention. Must every modern game, Devil May Cry or not, force us to beat up enemies to unlock doors?
I feel a little sorry for Ninja Theory: no matter how good a game they make, plenty of fans will reject DmC simply for giving Dante a makeover. And for those fans, there’s the Devil May Cry HD Collection, with gives the first three games in the series a hi-res coat of paint. It’s out in April, so fans can play Devil May Cry 2 again and realize that DmC, due later in the year, probably won’t be the low point of the series.
