MTV is Making a Nerd Reality Show, and No One is Trying to Stop Them
As if to counterbalance the somewhat respectful tone of last weekend’s Geek Love, there’s an open casting call for a new reality series on MTV. A reality series about nerds. A reality series from the people who loosed The Jersey Shore on a world that didn’t know any better.
?
Fandom Rising, as the series is apparently called, recently announced a search for geeks willing to appear on a show that’ll surely give nerd culture all of the insight it grants to a certain stretch of the Garden State. The website is short on descriptions of the series and long on appeals to nerd culture, calling for those “who value brains over brawn, substance over status quo, and march to the beat of their own cantina band.”
Should you read beyond that, a form asks you to prove your geek ways by listing your fandoms, your heroes, and, in a telling move, whether or not you’ve been mocked for “just being yourself.” You could give the producers the benefit of the doubt and assume that they’re out to present nerd culture realistically instead of strip-mining it for cheap laughs and imbecilic drama. You could, but then I’d have to remind you that this is being advertised as “From the masterminds behind The Jersey Shore.” (Via SlashFilm)
