I See What Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi Did There

One game I failed to mention during E3 was The Last Story, a Japanese RPG from the “godfather” of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi. Sakaguchi — a.k.a. “The Gooch” — was responsible for Final Fantasy I – IX, then was forced out at Square Enix because of the mind-bogglingly expensive failure of the Final Fantasy: Spirits Within movie, a move which has worked out for exactly no one. At any rate, while Square Enix has been squandering the entirety of the good will they built with Final Fantasy, The Gooch has quietly been making Japanese RPGs that are probably pretty good that no one hears or cares about.

The latest example of this is The Last StoryLast Story? Final Fantasy? Get it? Get it?! — which I mention for those people who, like me, are dying for a decent JRPG in their lives again. The it’s due out sometime in the next three months or so; only problem us that it’s only available on the Wii, as a Nintendo exclusive. And this is kind of the problem. Sakaguchi ends up making these games exclusive, minimizing the audience who can possibly play them; but even if you’re a Wii fanboy, this game is coming out right as the WiiU is about to come out while the Wii itself is on its last, motion-controlled legs, so that even the Wii’s fanbase will probably end up ignoring it. Dammit, Sakaguchi, all I want to do is give you my money. Why are you making it so difficult?
