Legendary comic artist Joe Kubert passed away this weekend at the age of 85. Kubert began working in comics at the tender age of 11, eventually making his way to DC Comics, where he rose to fame drawing Sgt. Rock and Hawkman. However, Kubert will probably be best-remembered for founding the Kubert School, which has helped and trained countless artists to get into the comics industry, including his two (very successful) sons, Adam and Andy. In 1996, he also released Fax from Sarajevo, about his friend and European comics agent Ervin Rustemagi? during the Serbian siege of Sarajevo; Rustemagic and his family spent more than two years hiding in a bombed out building, communicating with people mainly through fax. Fax from Sarajevo won Kubert both a Harvey and an Eisner. Kubert is already a member of the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Cartoonists Society. He’s one of the great ones, and the comics industry is certainly poorer for his loss. (Via Comic Book Resources)
