It’s Not 2015 Yet, But You Can Now Own a Hoverboard

We’ve known for months now that MattyCollector would be offering a replica of Marty McFly’s hoverboard from Back to the Future II and III, and now the company is finally prepping to ship the (tragically non-functional) item. Unlike most exclusives offered by the company, there seems to be plenty of the boards available, although I suspect this has more to do with the $130 plus tax price tag rather than increased production numbers. Or the fact that the replica is little more than a chunk of pink plastic covered with stickers that look like a Patrick Nagel fever dream. To each collector his/her own I suppose. Here’s the official lowdown:

Great Scott, film fans! You won’t need a flux capacitor to fulfill your density because the first ever Hoverboard prop replica from the classic Back to the Future? trilogy is right here.

Developed in conjunction with the original films’ special effects supervisor, Michael Lantieri, prop maker/special effects expert, Mary Anne Lantieri, and the co-producer and co-writer of the trilogy, Bob Gale, and fully sanctioned by Universal Studios, this is a 1:1 scale model (measures approximately 28″ x 8″ x 3″). Our Hoverboard is based on the best features of the more than 30 slight variations of Hoverboard props used in the classic film series, and includes authentic “whooshing” sounds sampled directly from the films and a deco featuring Mattel logos just like in the films. And although full hovering technology isn’t expected until 2015, be assured your Hoverboard will gently glide over most level surfaces (it will not, however, work on water).

If you want to, um, land a hoverboard of your own, you can order one here. I’ll wait until they come out with Griff’s Pit Bull model, thank you very much. Now could someone get to making pizza hydrators a reality already? (Via Neatorama)
