This Short Film Will Leave You Full of Wonder

Young Wonder to be precise. In this short from filmmaker James Wilkes, a boy uses his imagination to fight, amongst other foes, Darth Vader and giant robots. To say any more would give away the magic of the film, which you can watch after the jump.

Did anyone else get a Flight of the Navigator/Explorers vibe from this? There’s so much that is tonally right about this, from the way the brothers immediately leap from insulting each other to teaming up to save the world, to the older sibling’s relationship with his mom. There’s a real honesty and gentleness to this film that is downright Spielbergian Young Wonder screened earlier this week at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Short Cuts Canada series. A huge thanks to James Wilkes for bringing this to my attention. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. That’ll wrap things up for today, but head on back tomorrow for my last day of coverage before Luke returns!
