And the Hobbit Is @#$%ed Again

?I really, really hope that none of you guys had thought some of the recent murmurs about The Hobbit actually getting made were true. Well, more specifically, indicative of the movie actually getting made. Because while Peter Jackson might be gearing up to direct and Ian McKellan might be under the impression it’s on, it’s not. The latest reason: They done crossed the union! From THR:

Actors guilds including SAG, AFTRA and several international unions
have issued an alert against the big-budget adaptation of “The
Hobbit,” stating that their members “are advised not to accept work
on this non-union production.” The guilds say the producers of the
MGM/New Line fantasy blockbuster, to be
directed by Peter Jackson
, have rebuffed organizing efforts by
the New Zealand unit of an Australian actors union.

You can read a lot more boring shit about SAG and Jackson’s rebuttal and whatever, but every star in Hollywood is a member of SAG — the point in until they clear this up, there’s no Ian McKellan, no whoever they cast as Bilbo. Do I believe Jackson and MGM and the Screen Actor’s Guild can work this out? Yes. Do I believe they will? Not really. Will some other huge problem come up to stop production even if they do? Definitely.
