The Apes Aren’t The Only Ones Rising

Earlier this week, TR posted a look at the first footage from Rise of the Planet of the Apes (featuring one very sneaky looking primate). Yesterday, WETA held a live video chat discussing the production of the film. You can check out the apetastic details of the event at /Film, but the most important thing about the online press conference is that it was the build up to the release of the film’s trailer. Click above to watch it, then we can discuss.

Okay, a few points:

? I know it’s an action-oriented trailer, but James Franco really seems to be phoning it in here.
? It’s always nice to see Reaper‘s Tyler Labine getting work, even though he is probably horribly miscast unless his scientist character is of the wise-cracking comic relief variety.
? The ape jumping towards the helicopter at the end of the trailer reminds me of Peter Jackson’s King Kong. I don’t mean that as a good thing.
? This trailer made me think of The Fly II a lot. I don’t know why, it just did.
? Just after James Franco says “we call it the cure” someone really needs to edit the video for “Fascination Street” into the trailer.
? Brian Cox totally looks like Walter Sobchak in this.

Those things said, I am a die hard Planet of the Apes fan, so the scenes of ape mayhem have me so excited that I’m making thinly veiled boner jokes in the headline. So admittedly I am biased. But what do you think? Is this trailer a little bit of uh huh and a whole lotta meh for non fanatics of the franchise? Sound off in the comments if you would be so kind.
