TR Review: QMx Star Trek Phaser Replica

Quantum Mechanix is the super-collectible company behind that amazing $1500 Battlestar Galactica Viper Mark II Artisan model we saw Katee Sackhoff playing with a while ago. They also make statues and replica and things that are less spectacularly expensive, including a lot of Firefly stuff. For some reason, believing me to be a barely functional drunk, they did not send me their $1500 spaceship to review, but instead their $50 Star Trek movie Phaser replica.

?Which is probably smart, because no matter how drunk I get, I couldn’t damage this thing if I tried. It’s a 1:1 replica of the phasers from the new Trek movie, complete with several different metal finishes. It’s 10.5 inches long and 7 tall, and it just feels good and solid in your hand. This thing is hefty, too — you could easily bludgeon a man senseless with it if you were so inclined (although I really think the phaser itself would come out fine). Quantum Mechanix says that it was cast from a first-generation master of one of the phaser props actually used in the movie, and I can tell you the lines look exceedingly sharp — it really looks like it was assembled, not cast. And the metal finishes — teel, gunmetal, aluminum block and chrome — really sell it. Seriously, seeing this phaser, holding it in your hand — it’s hard to believe that it’s technically a sculpture.

I’m hardly a connoisseur of high-end collectibles, but I tell you this — I’m kind of shocked this thing is only $50. I don’t want to sound all Price is Right here, but I would have expected to pay more — hell,I can promise you I’ve paid a lot more for things that looked a lot worse than this. If you’re interested, the Enterprise Metal-Finished Phaser Replica is available here, and you can check out Quantum Mechanix other collectibles right here. But I wouldn’t hold your breath that they send me that Viper.
