Star Trek II: The Wrath of Dr. Gonzo

?It’s a slow enough news day that In feel compelled to report that J.J. Abrams has offered the unknown-but-very-possibly-Khan villain role of Star Trek 2 to Benicio Del Toro. Del Toro hasn’t accepted or signed a contract or anything, so it’s not news as much as a reasonable possibility. At least this makes it marginally more exciting than the reports that Tron 2‘s Garret Hedlund has been offered the lead role in the live-action Akira movie, since we already knew he was being considered for it (“We might like this guy to star in our movie!” Two weeks later, “BREAKING: This guy might star in our movie!”). This Del Toro stuff is marginally out of left field. I’m really hoping he’s not Khan, though — I’d really like the new Trek to try to make something people remember in 30 years as much as they loved Wrath of Khan. I know this is counter to everything Hollywood thinks, but still, I have my fingers crossed. (Via Variety)
