Chris Eccleston Is an Accursed Elf Lord (Also He’s Going to Be in Thor 2)

As soon as the subtitle for Thor 2 was revealed to be The Dark World, it was obvious the movie was going to focus on the dark elves of Svartleheim and their king, Malekith the Accursed. While we don’t know if Mads Mikkleson was originally cast in the role — and it doesn’t matter anyways, since he left — but now the Ninth Doctor, Chris Eccleston, is in talks to take over the role. As always, beware of anything “in talks,” but anytime a Doctor is even thinking about being in a major superhero movie I consider it news.

Anyways, I don’t have any problem with this casting, or with Malekith in general. What I’m confused about is the Casket of Ancient Winters. In Malekith’s main story in both the Thor comics and the Avengers: EMH cartoon, the Dark Elf King used the Casket to cover Earth in eternal winter, like you do. But the Casket was already featured prominently in the first Thor movie — it’s what Loki used to wreck the Frost Giants’ world. Would Marvel really repeat the same maguffin? Does using it on Earth change things? I’m not sure, just food for Thor. Er, thought. Thanks to everyone who sent in the tip. (Via Deadline)
