What the @#$% Happened to Universal Soldier

I don’t think I knew that Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren were making another Universal Soldier movie until I saw this trailer on Collider. Now I know, and it turns out I care a great deal. This trailer for Day of Reckoning is fucking bonkers, and I say that as someone who’s still reeling from the madness of the Iron Man 3 trailer. Seriously, watch it — it’s like some crazy mindfuck of an art movie… that just happens to star Van Damme and Lundgren as cyborgs. Here’s the synopsis:

John (Adkins, The Expendables 2) wakes up from a coma after his wife and daughter were slaughtered in a brutal home invasion. Haunted by images of the attack, he vows to kill the man responsible, Luc Deveraux (Van Damme). While John tries to piece his reality back together, things get more complicated when he is pursued by a relentless UniSol (Arlovski). As John gets closer to Deveraux and the rouge army of genetically enhanced warriors led by back-from-the-dead leader Andrew Scott (Lundgren), John discovers more about himself and begins to call into question everything he believed to be true.
If the movie is half as interesting as the trailer is, this — and I can’t really believe I’m saying this  about a Universal Soldierr film — could be one of the best movies of the year. I guess we’ll find out when it hits VOD on Thursday. Because it’s going straight to VOD. Because it’s a Universal Soldier movie. That looks this good.
