So here’s what I’m thinking…
Halle Berry saw Gravity, and said, “I want one of those, so people will like me again!” She somehow persuaded Steven Spielberg to listen to her, at which point he revealed that he wanted to remake A.I. because he just knows it was ahead of its time and people might actually like it if he made it again. And then they mashed up both ideas and went to every movie studio in town, all of whom said, “Are you fucking nuts? That’s a terrible idea!”
So it went to CBS, who’ll take anything. Like I said, just a theory.
