DVD Day: August 31st, 2010

? The Vampire Diaries: Complete First Season
I can’t tell you anything about this other than I think it’s True Blood without the copious sex and violence. Whether that’s a plus or minus is entirely up to you.

?? The Evil Dead Limited Edition
I’m assuming this is the third of the 18 versions of Evil Dead that Anchor Bay will release on Blu-ray, just like they did on DVD. I have neither the time nor the inclination to figure out what sets this one apart.

? Thriller: The Complete Series
I hadn’t heard of this acclaimed British horror series from the ’60s, but check out this cast — guest stars included William Shatner, Richard Chamberlain, Rip Torn, Leslie Nielsen, Elizabeth Montgomery, Warren Oates and Robert Vaughn, and the show was hosted by Boris Karloff. That sounds fantastic.

? Flashforward: The Complete Series
Of course, when they say “complete,” they mean “all the episodes they made” and not “anything resembling a complete story, since the show was canceled after season 1 meaning it ends with a cliffhanger and the central mystery doesn’t even approach being solved.”

? Strawberry Shortcake: The Glimmerberry Ball
The only reason I mention it is because I read the title and now I can’t stop thinking about the prom scene in Carrie, but with Carrie replaced with Strawberry Shortcake and all the blood replaced with strawberry preserves.

? Sea Prince and the Fire Child
There was either a conversation on TR or back in Anime Insider (ah, my booze-riddled memory) where someone had seen this as a kid and couldn’t figure out what it was. Someone eventually realized it was this. I’m assuming a few others of you have memories of seeing this old anime movie as well and also had no idea what it was.

? Alien Time Machine: Encounters from Another Dimensions
“Join Eerie Investigations’, Karen Frandsen, as she explores the
mysterious experiences of author, Terry Le Riche Walters. Terry’s
personal accounts of alien visitations, abductions and spiritual
prophecies from other dimensions are profound and riveting. See the
world’s only real Time Machine built using alien technology. Featuring
exclusive footage of the machine and a group of researchers gathered to
discuss its use and the bizarre technology behind it. Uncover dramatic
insights into the fabric of reality itself and will keep you up at night
wondering about what’s “real” and what isn’t.”
