TR Review: Crazy4Cult Cult Movie Art Book

If you read Topless Robot, I’m guessing you’d heard of Gallery 1988 and their awesome Crazy4Cult art shows. If not, let me break it down for you: There’s an art gallery in L.A. called Gallery 1988. They do these art shows called “Crazy4Cult.” These shows — and here’s where it gets interesting — are all inspired by cult movies, ranging from ’80s hits like Edward Scissorhands to Planet of the Apes to the works of Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino to The Big Lebowski and so on. Now there’s a hardcover book collecting some of the art from these shows, titled Gallery 1988’s Crazy4Cult Cult Movie Art.

?I call this a review, but really, you know if you like artistic interpretations of beloved movies, past and present. As a faux scholar of pop culture — or at least a nerd who’s interested in the mechanics of how pop culture affects and is affected by people and society — I happen to love it, and I love this book. It’s 171 pages of paintings, sculptures and other mixed media by 150 artists, all beautifully reproduced. Obviously, there’s no way anybody is going to like all the pieces in this book, but I can guarantee you everybody will be blown away by at least some of them.

Anyways, I personally recommend the hell out it, and I hope it does well — because I’ll get every single damn collection Gallery 1988 and Titan Books puts out. Right now, the book is only $23 at Amazon — kind of a steal, even if you just want it to leave it out so other people see it and think you’re interesting.
