TR Contest: Topless Robot Trading Cards

?This contest is a weird one, but I good one, I think. It comes from the seeds of two things that happened recently: 1) I went to USA Today‘s Pop Candy party at SDCC, where Whitney Matheson was giving away Pop Candy trading cards. They were cute and fun, and there were six of them, I think. 2) I ran Chris’ Trading Cards That Need a Revival list a few weeks ago, and some of you started suggesting what Topless Robot trading cards might be like. I tried to shut down that conversation immediately, because I know a great contest idea when I hear it. And thus, this weekend’s contest is: Create the Topless Robot trading card set.

I don’t mean you have to draw one, although you’re welcome to do that. I mean, think up what cards you feel should be in a such a set; what’s the picture and title on the front, what’s the text on the back, whatever. Moreover, what should be in such a set? TR in-jokes? Fan fic spotlights? The Topless Roboteers? Something else? A mix of everything? I expect many heated but polite conversations on what a TR trading card series should consist, and you know why?

Because these might actually get made.

Now, it’s a small, small chance. It depends on about a million things, not least of which is how doable the cards you come up with are (for instance, there’s no way I’m getting approval on a 100+ card series, but maybe 24? 36?). There’s also the issue of money, and if it comes down to a raise or making the cards, I’m damn well taking the raise. But all that said, it could happen. So I need you nerds at your best.

Now, since this “contest” involves entries with a much broader scope than usual, it’s admittedly kind of weird.  Really, I’d try not to worry about specific entries so much and you guys just go crazy trying to think up the best TR cards you can, and I’ll figure out who should get the shirts after the contest is over. I know that’s easy for me to say, but the contests will return to regularity after this, so please don’t stress over it.

That said, I’m going to need a lot of specific card ideas, too — both front and back — so don’t hesitate to make up as many of those as you want. Especially once you guys think of a style/theme/whatever you like.

So that’s it. No limit on ideas or entries. Go nuts. The “contest” ends at 12:01 am EST on August 22nd, 2011. I eagerly await the madness.
