Marvel Announces “Mild Distress on a Limited Number of Reboots”

MarvelNOW_JoeQ-224x300.jpeg

I’m typing this news article one-handed, because my other hand is trying to perform the world’s most dismissive wanking motion, so forgive me if I keep this brief. Marvel has announced “Marvel Now!” which is totally like DC’s New 52 except not really and it plays it even safer than DC did. What it really boils down to this:

? There’ll be some relaunchs (a.k.a. #1 issues), some new series, and a few redesigns
? No major continuity changes (as known at the moment)
? Avengers will be taken over by Jonathan Hickman (yay!), X-Men will be taken over by Bendis (huh?) and there’ll be a new title called The Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender which will start Cap, Wolverine, Rogue, and god knows who else
? Each issue will now have a lot of digital content, which is actually quite, quite smart
In case you were worried that this Marvel New-ninverse would be too dramatically different from the current one, it appears Jean Grey is coming back for round 3, so it’s same old, same old as far as I’m concerned. EiC Alex Alonso says, “This ain’t no reboot, It’s a new beginning!” which I think pretty much sums it up. Marvel just wants some of that sweet, sweet DCnU attention,  and by keeping continuity but renumbering things they get it without the fan bitching. It’s not the worst idea in the world, but I wonder if they’ll really do any better at attracting new readers than DC was, since they’re keeping all that continuity.
Anyways, you can get a few more details at Comic Book Resources and see the EW article with the initial announcement at iFanboy. Let’s just wait for more details until we decide whether it’s worth being genuinely upset. Thanks to Themac3999 for the tip; now if you’ll excuse me, I really need to concentrate on my dismissive wanking motion.
