Rocks in My Pockets: Animated Feature About Sanity, From Director Who Was in a Soviet Asylum

I always enjoy finding an animated feature that breaks the mold of what the U.S. rigidly thinks cartoons must be, and Rocks in My Pockets, which opens September in New York and LA with a national rollout to follow, certainly fits that bill. A “comedy about depression,” it uses hand-drawn surrealism mixed with stop-motion to create a dreamlike portrait of five women in Latvian filmmaker Signe Baumane’s family, and their various struggles with mental illness. But it’s no downer drama – the journey into madness takes the viewer there as well, with all sorts of strange sights and sounds.

Nothing cynical or snarky to say here, folks. Watch the trailer and you’ll see why I’m just plain ol’ looking forward to it.
