Sony Has the Power (Sigh)

Well, that was quick. Just a few weeks after Warner Bros. and Mattel went their separate ways regarding the Masters of the Universe movie, Sony/Columbia Pictures swooped in to make the movie instead, probably looking to make some of that sweet TF2/G.I. Joe movie cash for themselves. The good news is that they’re starting over on the film, which means dumping the director and the script — which, if you recall, had Prince Adam as an astronaut that lands on Eternia where Skeletor is trying to destroy magic.

I’m happy about the do-over, but I’m not stupid enough to believe that the next take will be any or accurate to my beloved MOTU. It’s not that I think Sony is worse than Warner — really, it’s six of one, half dozen of the other — but I think He-Man is just too weird a concept to survive the Hollywood system. It was true in 1987, and I’m betting it’s true now — hence that last bullshit script. Frankly, I wish that it had taken longer for Mattel to find another studio to partner with. I had been happy and hopeful for the movie after Warner dropped out; the closer the He-Man movie gets to getting made, the more upset and disillusioned I get. Thanks to everyone who sent in the tip.
