The Greatest American Liar

greatest2a.jpg
Okay, I don’t want to call Greatest American Hero creator Stephen J. Cannell a liar?although I clearly just did in the title?but his constant announcements about the forever in-the-works Greatest American Hero movie and equally nebulous new TV series is getting a little suspicious. He’s seriously been talking about both projects for years?most recently, the movie was supposed to have started filming this past July?but here’s what he said earlier this month (according to SciFi Wire):

“We’ve written a screenplay, and we’ve hired a director, and we’re in the midst of putting this together for the future,” Cannell told an audience in Hollywood on Sept. 7 at a panel commemorating the Screen Actors Guild foundation’s 75th anniversary.

So it obviously didn’t quite start filming yet. Still, at least there’s the top-heavy GAH webseries still going on (I think), and William Katt is still doing the GAH comic via his Catastrophic Comics. Oh, and Katt also has?er, had?a swell guest-spot on Heroes last night, which I and some of the fine folks who joined me for last night’s live-blog think might still be on-going. If that really was the end, at least Katt and his former co-stars have a theoretical paycheck in the mail:

After Cannell’s movie announcement, [Connie] Sellecca took the opportunity to lock in roles for herself and fellow original cast members William Katt and Robert Culp.

“I’m going to put Stephen on the spot,” Sellecca said with a grin. “Cameos for us?”

“Absolutely guaranteed,” Cannell responded. “More than cameos: acting jobs.”
